Joan La Barbara (b. 1947, Philadelphia), dubbed "the reigning vocal wizard of the avant-garde," is a composer/performer, media artist, writer and internationally-acclaimed pioneer in the field of experimental and extended vocal techniques. In "rediscovering" the voice, expanding the sonic vocabulary of this highly flexible instrument, she creates works that explore new territory, blending with other instruments or creating an orchestra of voices through multi-layering.
